22nd Hobie 16 World Championships
Captiva Island, FL
November 9, 2019 Press Release

Entry into the open division of the Hobie 16 World Championships is a qualification required event. Sailors can either prequalify from their home country or they can attempt to qualify on-site in the two day open qualifying event. 43 boats are competing in the qualifying event for a berth into the open championships.
The first day of open qualifying got underway today following a 1.5 hour on-shore postponement to allow a squaw line to pass. Once the rain cleared racing started in 20 knots of wind from the NE. The first two races were sailed in 20 knots of breeze but during the session change, the wind moderated to 12-16 knots for the remainder of the day. Five races were completed in spectacular conditions for the day. Most races were started under the U flag, however the fleet got a bit anxious in the final race of the day prompting an appearance of the black flag. After one day of racing, Yamil SABA/Gonzalo CENDRA (VEN) lead followed by Andrew KEAG/Helen WARNEKE (AUS) in second and Emilio VALES/Joaquin RUIZ (MEX) in third.
Racing in the qualifying round continues through Sunday. The open world championships then begins on Monday.
