With under 6 months to go before the 22nd Hobie World Championships in 2019, at Captiva Island, over 400 athletes have now registered.
With less than 7 months to the start of the 22nd Hobie 16 World Championships at Captiva Island, Florida we have started to attract some famous names from the past and stars of the future. This month we look at the Great Grand Masters, as we have Steve Leo USA and John Dinsdale FRA. Steve and John competed in the very first Hobie 16 World Championships in 1976 at Honolulu, Hawaii. 43 years later to the day, 6th November 1976 was the last day of the 1st Hobie World Championships, 6th November 2019 will be the 1st day of the Great Grand Masters. In under 8 months the 22nd Hobie 16 World Championship in Captiva Florida kicks off. The tokens for the first batch of pre-qualified and qualifying sailors for the Hobie 16 Open Championships have been sent out to the lucky sailors. To assist their youth sailors to attend the world championships, the Hobie Class Association of North America have made up to $1,000 for 10 of their youth team. This is a fantastic initiative. What should you expect from a world championship compared to a national or continental event? First, it’s very international and this by itself is a stimulating experience. You will meet Hobie sailors from around the world that speak many different languages – but all love Hobie sailing. I have sailed in the European Championships a few times and even though we don’t know many sailors from Europe, it’s always a great opportunity to meet new people. It’s always interesting how people try to yell for room at the gate in twelve different languages. Travelling to a new place is part of the experience. I am always amazed at some of […]
